The Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA) was established as a registered society in New Delhi on November 11, 1965. It is considered to be the premier strategic and security studies Think Tank in India. Over the years the Institute has enlarged its focus of research from defence studies to cover issues of national and international security. The Institute is funded by the Indian Ministry of Defence, but functions autonomously. Apart from research, the Institute also provides training programmes to civilian and military officers of the Government of India. The Indian Parliament's Standing Committee on Defence frequently utilises the expertise of the Institute.

The Institute has a well-qualified multi-disciplinary research faculty of over 50 scholars drawn from academia, defence forces and the civil services. Their research output is mainly published in the Institute's journal, Strategic Analysis or as monographs and books. IDSA also publishes the Strategic Digest, which is a monthly compendium of information from open sources;and Current Journal Contents, which is a compilation of contents pages of about 70 core journals.

Strategic Analysis is the flagship in the IDSA stable of publications. It served as a medium for publishing commentaries on current events till early 1987 and continued to be a monthly journal over the next decade. Its contents came to include both research articles as well as commentaries on national and international developments. It was transformed into a quarterly, refereed journal from 2002 and from January 2007, Routledge, an imprint of the Taylor & Francis Group, UK, published the journal in a bi-monthly format.

The Institute holds periodic bilateral dialogues with similar institutions and organisations from various parts of the world. Dialogues with each such institution is held on a mutually agreed upon set of topics in each country alternately. Scholars from each side present papers to set the tone for the discussions, and the proceedings of these interactions are, in some instances, published.

A number of IDSA's white papers and academic findings will be published throughout 2008 in partnership with Informa India and BSEC 2008.
